Week 10

This week I made a Mashed Potato Casserole
I got the recipe idea from class when the boys made mashed potatoes and I thought that I'd put meat and a bunch of other stuff in it because why not.

Ingredients:
- Potatoes
- Ground Beef
- Green Beans
- Carrots
- Mushrooms (didn't realize they were in my fridge and decided to throw them in after taking the picture)
- Cheese
- Salt
- Pepper
- Olive Oil

The process for making this meal was fairly simple. The hardest part was putting everything together. I started by chopping my potatoes up and boiling a pot of water so I could start cooking my potatoes so they could be mashed by the time I finished cooking the rest of the ingredients. I then chopped my carrots and green beans into bite sized pieces. Once I got my potatoes in the pot and cooking I heated up some olive oil in a pan and put in my ground beef. I then cooked my beef until it had a brown crust. I then removed my beef and put more olive oil in the pan. I then put in all my vegetables and began scraping off the fond from the bottom of the pan to incorporate the flavor into the vegetables. Once the vegetables were finished I put them off to the side and began mashing my potatoes. Once the potatoes were mashed I put a layer of mashed potatoes in a glass container, followed by copious amounts of cheese, followed by the ground beef and vegetable mixture, followed by more cheese, potatoes, and of course more cheese. Finally I put the container in the over at 365 for 15-20 minutes. Ultimately this was a very easy dish. The hardest part was putting everything together and just timing it all so that all of the components finished at about the same time so nothing would go super cold. I really enjoyed making this dish because it's so easy. I also like it because I can add whatever I want. Some of the things I feel like I could add or substitute would be corn, sweet peas, bacon, ground turkey, or ground chicken to name a few. Overall this was a really quick, cheap, and easy meal that fed my dad and I for like 3 days because I made 5 lbs of mashed potatoes.
