Part 1 - List and purchase pantry items
I went shopping at Target and Fresh Thyme. The items I needed were:
Butter
Eggs
Milk
Bread
Blueberries
This week I cooked honey butter chicken. It was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it. I used butter that I bought with the help of the pantry assignment. The cooking process was super easy and yielded amazing flavor. Basing the chicken with the butter helped keep the chicken moist and flavorful. The hardest part of this process was keeping the kitchen clean from the raw chicken. I took extra care in cleaning everything the chicken touched. Overall this was a great recipe that I will make again.
Why did you choose these pantry items?
These are staples of any pantry and are easy to find in stores.
Did you save any money?
I saved money when I bought from Target because they can afford to have better pricing than Fresh Thyme.
Estimate the cost of the item(s) in the recipe you prepared, e.g., if you purchased 2 lbs of brown rice for $2.89 and used ¼ lb, the cost would be $0.36.
1 tsp olive oil----- Under 10 cents
3 tbsp butter------ $1.50
1 lb chicken thighs boneless and skinless,----- $ 5.44
Salt and pepper---- very cheap under 10 cents
2.5 tbsp honey---- 27 cents
1.5 tbsp cider vinegar---- 15 cents
Total= around $7.50
How will the pantry item(s) you purchased affect the total cost of future meals?
Basic ingredients will drive the price down because I have already made the investment.
3. What is a pantry staple, and what are the benefits of maintaining a personal home food pantry?
A staple are basic items that you should own if you cook often. The benefits are not having to go shopping as much.
4. Were you surprised by anything in this exercise?
This clearly shows that it is worth it to buy pantry staples.
Will it influence your shopping or eating patterns in the future?
It will make me want to cook with what I already own.
5. Do you think building or expanding on your personal food pantry would be a worthwhile goal? If so, what do you need to do to accomplish that goal?
I want to expand my pantry at home and will do so by doing research. I want to find ingredients that are used often in a variety of ways.
