1.) For this assignment we were asked to pick two difference recipes and go to two different stores. One store needed to be a corner or convenience store, then the second could be your typical grocery store. Then with this in mind I decided to make easy recipes. The first was your typical peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and an easy french toast.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich Ingredients:
-Bread of your choice
-Preferred peanut butter
-Jelly
French Toast:
-Bread
-Eggs
-Milk
-Cinnamon
-Syrup
2.) When it came to pricing there was a large difference in pricing between the two stores. The ingredients that I compared were as follows: Bread, Milk, Eggs, Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Syrup.
Tim and Tom's Speedy Market (St. Paul) Pricing
-Cottage Bread:$3.89
-Gallon of Skim Milk: $3.89
-Dozen Eggs: $1.89
-Skippy Peanut Butter: $3.79
-Smucker's Strawberry Jelly: $4.59
-Non-name brand Syrup: $4.99
Total of Tim and Tom's= $23.04
Cub Foods (Bloomington) Pricing
-Cottage Bread: $2.50 (on sale 2 for $5.00)
-Gallon of Skim Milk: $2.99
-Dozen Eggs: $1.99
-Skippy Peanut Butter: $2.49
-Smucker's Strawberry Jelly: $3.49
-Non-name brand Syrup: $1.79
Total of Cub Foods= $15.25
Now looking back at the pricing there is a pretty substantial difference in price. This price stems from convenience. The convenience of Tim and Tom's is unmatched for a small corner store in its community. People can walk over to the store and get many items that you need for your pantry, but you pay more on average for each item. Then on the other hand, Cub foods has much more items located in its stores. This also has a downside because most people have to get in their car and drive to larger chain grocery stores.
3.) The portion above shows the pricing breakdown of the 6 ingredients, and it also has some reasoning for why there may be a difference in price from one location to the other location. The largest price difference was in the syrup. There were many artisan maple syrups, which were much more expensive. But, I decided to find a non name brand syrup. At Tim and Tom's it was $4.99, and cub foods was $1.79. This large difference in price is shocking to me, but I am sure that at a smaller store an item like this is not very popular. Other than that you can see the smaller store holds about an extra $1 on the price of each item for the convenience of the items. This is of no surprise to me. In the future I will still go to both of these places. You just need to understand that the pricing may be a little higher for the ease of purchases. When it came to purchasing I did not buy anything from either of the stores because I had all of the ingredients on hand in my pantry.
4.) The final recipe that I used was a basic french toast. The first thing for this recipe is gather the ingredients: Eggs, Milk, Vanilla Extract, Cinnamon, Bread. To begin you mix one egg with a splash of milk, a dash of bother vanilla extract and cinnamon. Then you will whisk this mixture together. After it is whisked you dunk a slice of bread in there making sure that it is coated. After the bread is coated you place in a pan and cook until golden brown on each side. This recipe was perfect for this budgeting activity because the ingredients can be found in nearly any store no matter how big or the location. The largest difference is the pricing for convenience.
