Brown Rice Bowl

PART 1:

Target vs. Trader Joes
1. Olive oil: 4.49 vs 3.99
2. Quinoa: 3.64 vs 2.99
3. Peppers: 3.99 vs 2.79
4. Tofu: 2.32 vs 1.99
5. Chili powder: 1.49 vs 1.23

I purchased chili powder to be part of my cooking assignment this week.

PART 2:
Brown Rice Bowl: https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/black-beans-with-bell-peppers-rice/
Ingredients:
-1 cup of brown rice
-3 bell peppers
-1/2 of a red onion
-4 cloves of garlic
-1 can of black beans
-3.5 tablespoons of olive oil
-chili powder

This was my first time making this and I thought it turned out well! I first started by chopping up the peppers, red onion, and garlic, and then sauteed them on medium heat. Next I heated the brown rice and black beans on the stove. I usually don't add seasoning, so adding red chili pepper was definitely new and added more flavoring. If I were to change anything, I would add tofu for protein and add more/other seasonings, such as cilantro, to add flavor.

PART 3
1. I chose the pantry items from part 1 because they were either ingredients that I use often (olive oil, peppers, quinoa) or items I want to expand on (tofu, chili powder and other seasonings). Yes, I would save money, about 50 cents on each item with the exception of the chili powder.

2.
1 cup of brown rice (1.5)
Can of black beans (.99)
Bag of Garlic (1.59)
3 bell peppers (3.09)
Red onion (.99)
Olive oil (6.99, 50 servings)
Red chili powder (1.23)
Price calculations: (1.5+.99+.27+3.09+.50+.49+.02)/4=1.72
I divided the total by 4 because I meal prepped and made 4 meals out of my ingredients.
Since pantry items are relatively cheap and last a long time, I will be buying more of them. I will specifically be buying more seasonings since chili powder only cost be roughly .02 cents per meal.

3. Pantry staples are basic, versatile ingredients that can be used frequently for any meal. The benefits of having a variety of pantry staples are that you can make many different meals with them while also having meals full of different flavors and textures.

4.  I was surprised by just how cheap my dinner was (1.72). This will affect my eating patterns by eating out less to save a lot more money. I will probably buy more ingredients like brown rice, black beans, and seasonings since they are so cheap.

5. Expanding my personal pantry will definitely be worth it because the ingredients have a long shelf life and are relatively cheap. This will also force me to cook different meals rather than eating the same thing every week. To accomplish this goal, I will try to add two pantry items that I usually don't buy to my grocery list.
