For this week's blog I decided to make dumplings / wontons / potstickers with my friends (there weren't any dumpling wrappers so we used wonton wrappers but they were still dumplings??) It's a really easy dish to make / meal prep because you can make a lot of them and freeze them for later and it's really fun to make with your friends! I decided to make this as my cultural recipe because it's a pretty traditional Chinese dish and according to 23 and me I'm 94% Chinese so it was pretty appropriate! I called my mom for the recipe and some tips and she gave some pretty expert opinion even though we've never made dumplings at home before... Anyway, here's the recipe!
ingredients
- group pork
- dumpling wrappers
- napa cabbage
- green onions
- minced garlic
- minced ginger
- salt
- pepper
- soy sauce
- sesame oil
- cilantro (opnional)
recipe
1. chop the napa cabbage finely and rub salt all over it to draw out the moisture and let it sit for at least 20 minutes
2. chop up the green onions finely
3. mix ground pork, green onions, cabbage, minced garlic, minced ginger, salt, pepper, soy sauce, sesame oil together
3. wrap the filling in the dumpling wrappers
4. boil the dumplings
reflection
Although dumplings is more of a traditional food in northern China and my family is from the Southern part, growing up my family often ate dumplings because it was quick and really good! This was however my second time making it from scratch but it's a lot easier than I thought it would be. If I were to make it again (which I probably will) I definitely would chop everything finer (especially the cabbage) and maybe use a food processor to make the filling smoother and easier to wrap. But overall it was really fun to make it with friends and it took us maybe an hour to prepare all the ingredients AND wrap about 120 of them!!
