Recipe: Garlic Butter Steak
Ingredients: Sirloin Steak (or any cut), mushroom, garlic (4 cloves), rosemary, butter (2-4 tablespoons), salt, pepper
Steps:
(Note: This recipe comes from one of my roommates.)
1) Heat up a cast-iron skillet until it's smoking hot. Cut mushroom into slices.
2) Add butter to the skillet and melt the butter.
3) Once all butter is melted, add steak to the cast iron skillet followed by garlic (whole cloves), rosemary, salt, and pepper. Heat each side of the steak for 7-8 minutes.
4) On a separate skillet, add olive oil, mushroom, and some salt. Stir fry the mushroom until it's caramelized.
5) Place the cooked steak onto a plate and cut it into slices. Add cooked mushroom on top of the steak.
Incorporation of Cooking Techniques:
For this week's recipe, the techniques of slicing and mincing were used to cut the mushroom and rosemary, respectively. With plenty of practice from previous weeks of cooking, the cutting has become fairly simple.
Reflection:
This is my first time trying to cook a steak at home. Given how expensive a steak can get in a restaurant, cooking it at home can save me a considerable amount of money. The preparation was relatively easy. The steak has been cut when purchased from Fresh Thyme. Cutting up mushroom and rosemary was fairly straightforward. It was a bit tricky to use the cast-iron skillet for the first time, and one of my roommates helped set the skillet up and gave me some guidance on how to cook the steak. The addition of garlic and rosemary did make the dish more aromatic and tasty. The entire cooking process took a bit longer than 30 minutes, which was a bit of a surprise to me who thinks steak is something hard to cook. The finished dish tasted pretty good, and I could potentially add some broccoli as a side next time I am cooking a steak.
