Budgeting and Final project
Part 1:
My final meal is going to be comfort food themed. I was planning on making my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe for Thanksgiving so I will be making those. I will also make a steak for my main course. The side will be roasted broccoli.
Shopping list:
My normal food budget just applies to what the homework assignment is for this class. I am a freshman and have a meal plan, so I do not cook as much as I should. This week's meal is definitely more expensive because it is three courses and one of them is steak. My budget is around 20 dollars a month.
Part 2:
Do you think your food budget is adequate to purchase food to support a nutritionally balanced diet?
At the moment it is not because I am paying for the meal plan as well. If I was not I would have a lot more capital to use on my budget.
Have you made any changes since the beginning of class to either your food budgeting or food purchasing habits? If so, what were they?
I have been buying a lot less processed foods. I am trying to buy things with a few ingredients or making my own snacks.
Has your cooking and/or eating changed? If so, how?
My eating habits have definitely changed. Eating less processed foods is a good start, but ideally I would love to only eat freshly prepared foods. That might be a ways away, but it is definitely a goal.
Final Project Meal:
The first thing I started to prepare was the chocolate chip cookies. I took out the butter and brought it to room temperature. One of the only changes I make to the recipe is the kind of flour I use. I use baking flour instead of all purpose. Then, I mixed the dry ingredients. I combined all the ingredients in a stand mixer and put the dough in the fridge overnight. I have found that the longer the dough is chilled the better the cookies turn out.
The next day, I cut up the broccoli and mixed them with oil, salt and pepper. I put them on a tray and put them aside. After that, I warmed up my cast iron skillet in the oven and took out my steak. I seasoned the steak with olive oil and northwoods steak seasoning. Next I put the broccoli in the oven and prepared my cookies for the oven. When the broccoli was done I took them out and put the cookies in. Lastly I seared my steak and finished it in the oven.
This meal was great and the process was very interesting. I learned the importance of planning ahead and how to multitask. The hardest part was being able to keep track of all my food during the cooking process. I did not make any mistakes or over cook anything. I can hardly imagine what it is like working in the kitchen for a restaurant. Overall my meal was delicious and I would highly recommend making it.
