1. The first recipe that I would like to prepare in this week is scrambled eggs with shrimp. The ingredients are shrimp, eggs, salt, black pepper, soy sauce, onions, and oil. The second recipe is Chinese braised pork in brown sauce. The ingredients are pork, ginger, oil, sugar, bay leaves, star anise, Chinese cooking wine, soy sauce, salt, and onions.
2. Besides the seasoner such as salt, black pepper, soy sauce, sugar, Chinese cooking wine, bay leaves, star anise and oil, I also need to buy shrimp, eggs, pork, green onion, and ginger.
I compare the prices in Fresh Thyme(a convenience store near my dorm) and Shuang Hur Supermarket.
Shrimp | Egg | Pork | Onions | Ginger | |
Fresh Thyme | $8.99/lb | $0.99/12pc | $2.99/lb |
$1.19/lb
| $1.79/lb |
Shuang Hur Supermarket | $7.49/lb | $0.85/12pc | $3.45/lb |
$2.24/3lbs
| $1.29/lb |
The cost form Fresh Thyme(for same amount): $8.99/lb + 0.99/12pc + $2.99/lb + $1.19/lb + $1.79/lb = $15.95
The cost form Shuang Hur Supermarket(for same amount): $7.49/lb + 0.85/12pc + $3.45/lb + ($2.24/3)/lb + 1.29$/lb = $13.83
$15.95-$13.83=$2.12
3. The items in Shuang Hur Supermarket are cheaper than Fresh Thyme, so I bought the five items from Shuang Hur Supermarket, which save $2.12 for same amount of items. I find that I almost only used a part of these items, so I think I can build a food pantry to save a week food. I can buy a lot of food at a cheap price and use them many times. I was surprised by this exercise. This exercise will influence my shopping in the future. I will make a shopping list ahead of time and buy food for a week, which is cheap and time-saving.
4. I will show how to do the second recipe--Chinese Braised Pork in Brown Sauce
The recipe source is https://bebraveandbloom.com/chinese-braised-pork-in-brown-sauce/
Ingredients:
pork
ginger
cooking oil
sugar
bay leaves
star anise
Chinese cooking wine
soy sauce
onions
Steps to make it:
1. Boil the pork until you see large areas of white foam. This means that the meat is fully cooked. Drain and rinse the pork with cold water. Cut the pork belly into bite size pieces. Set aside.
2. Cut the ginger. Gather the other ingredients; star anise and bay leaves. Mix the soy sauce and Chinese cooking wine.
3. Over low heat, add the vegetable oil and sugar to the wok. Cook and stir until sugar is slightly melted and nicely caramelized, add boiled pork. Increase the heat to medium and cover the wok to avoid overspray. Stir until all the pork is incorporated into the mixture and lightly browned.
4. Turn the heat back to low and add in the sauce ingredients. Stir. Toss in the ginger. Stir just until incorporated, about 20 seconds. Add just enough water to cover the pork. Add the star anise and bay leaves to the wok.
5. Increase the heat to high until it boils, then cover the wok, turn the heat down to medium/low and simmer for 40 minutes – 1 hour or until pork is tender. Turn up to high heat until all the liquid is absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Add water if it gets too dry. Fold in salt.
6. Serve with white rice and your favorite vegetables.
Braised Pork in Brown Sauce is a popular dish in Chinese kitchen. It’s tender, flavorful and delicious. You can also add some chili to adjust the level of spice to your liking. When it's done, you can mix it with your favorite staples and vegetables. I usually eat it with rice and broccoli, which is tasty. I am satisfied with the dish I cooked today.
How I incorporated the weekly technique
When I make this dish, I need to cut pork and ginger. And I learned how to use knives to cut different shapes and sizes of food in class. Take pork for example, I put the long strips pork on the cutting board, hold it in the left hand, and cut vertically in the right hand, while the left hand is back with the right hand. The pork is then cut into even segments.
