Budgeting #1

Part 1
1.
Dry Goods Pantry:
Whole grains - rice
Fresh herbs/spices - ginger

Refrigerator Pantry:
Sweet corn
carrot

Freezer:
Animal protein - pork spare ribs

2. I went to Fresh Thyme and Shuang Hur Supermarket and found and record the prices for all five pantry items from each store. The prices are in the Part 3.

3. I bought these 5 items to cook.

Part 2
This week I made sweet corn carrot pork bone soup.
The recipe source is https://www.ohmyfoodrecipes.com/sweet-corn-carrot-pork-bone-soup/

Ingredients:
1200 ml water
500 grams pork bones
2 sweet corn on the cob husked and chopped into chunks
2 medium carrots peeled and cut into chunks
1 ginger, cut into slices
Chinese dried dates (optional, it makes the soup even sweeter)
salt to taste

Steps to make it:
1. cut the corn and carrots into small pieces
2. Rinse pork bone
3. Put corn, carrots, Chinese dried dates and pork bones into a pot add 1200 ml water
4. Turn on fire to high and let it boils then turn fire to medium low simmering for 1.5 hours
5. Skimming the fat
6. Add salt to your taste

Sweet corn carrot pork bone soup is one of my favorite Chinese soups. Not only it tastes sweet, but also has good nutrients. Normally, traditional Chinese soups take about 1.5-2 hours to cook them on top stove. This kind of soup has health benefits such as strengthen immune system, improve skin conditions and cure sickness. Moreover, sweet corn carrot pork bone soup helps with moisturizing skins. This sweet corn carrots pork bone soup is one of the easiest soups to make and people love this soup because of the sweetness.

Part 3
1. the cost of five pantry items in Fresh Thyme and Shuang Hur Supermarket

Rice
Ginger
Sweet corn
Carrot
Pork spare ribs
Fresh Thyme
$7.99/2lbs
$1.29/lb
5 for $2
$0.99/lb
$4.99/lb
Shuang Hur Supermarket
$4.95/2lbs
$1.99/lb
3 for $1.99
0.99/lb
$3.99/lb

I bought the five items from Shuang Hur Supermarket because they are cheaper than in Fresh Thyme, so I saved some money.

2. I used $0.13 for 1/2 carrot (1 carrot is $0.26–0.26 1b @ $0.99/lb), $0.33 for 1/2 sweet corn (3 for $1.99), $2 for 1/2 lb pork bones($3.99/lb), $0.11 for 1/2 ginger (1 ginger is $0.22–0.11lb @ $1.99/lb), the price of rice is almost negligible.

I almost only used a half of these items so I can use them next time, which will decrease the total cost of future meals

3. The benefit of maintaining a personal home food pantry is that I can buy a lot of food at a cheap price and use them many times. So I can save some money by doing this.

4. I was surprised by this exercise. This exercise will influence my shopping and eating patterns in the future.

5. I think building or expanding on my personal food pantry would be a worthwhile goal. In order to accomplish this goal, I will make a shopping list ahead of time and buy food such as rice, vegetables, meat, eggs, fruits and yogurt for a week, which is cheap and time-saving.
