Week 1 - Shrimp Onion Omelet

For week 1 cooking assignment, I wrote a recipe myself to cook some shrimp onion omelet.

Recipe Name: Shrimp Onion Omelet

Required Ingredients

  • Eggs (3)
  • Onion (1/2)
  • Shrimp (raw, 6)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Soy Sauce
  • Cooking Oil
  • Sesame Oil (optional)
  • Note: Amount of each ingredient can be adjusted according to your needs.

Cooking Steps:
1)    Peel off the onion skin. Dice the onions and place onion dices on a plate for later use.
2)    Peel off shrimp skins and devein the shrimp. Cut shrimp into smaller pieces.
3)    Add cooking oil and shrimp into a pan to precook the shrimp pieces. Place pre-cooked pieces on the same plate as the onions
4)    Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat until we have a homogenous yellow mixture. Add salt, pepper, and soy sauce for taste.
5)    Add pre-cooked shrimp pieces as well as onion dices into the egg mixture. Stir until all pieces are evenly distributed.
6)    Add oil and heat up the pan again. Pour the egg mixture with shrimp and onion pieces into the pan.
7)    Heat up the egg mixture until one side solidifies. Then flip the egg to cook the other side.
8)  (Optional) Add sesame oil to the egg to bring up the smell.
9)    Cook until each side of the omelet is light brown.

Incorporation of Weekly Technique:

For this recipe, one will be tasked to dice half of an onion. After onion skin was peeled off, the onion was cut into two halves. One half was stored in a plastic bag for later use. The bottom of the other half was cut before we proceed to dice the onion using techniques presented in week 1 of the course.

Reflection:

This is my first time attempting to make an omelet in a very long time, and the end result was satisfactory. The omelet was tasty and filling, and the addition of shrimp and onions made an otherwise plain omelet look more aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.

The cooking time was not too long, but the preparation took over 40 minutes. Specifically, I was experiencing some issues dicing the onion as I have very little previous experience dicing vegetables. Hopefully, as I progress in the course and with help from others, I will be able to dice vegetables more easily.

The amount of egg mixture was too much for one pan to handle, so I did the cooking process twice to use up all the raw materials. The first omelet actually turned into scrambled egg because I forgot to add oil to the pan and the egg mixture got “stuck” to the pan after being cooked. I corrected this problem the second time and an actual omelet was made successfully.

I asked my roommates to try out the dish, and they commented on either the good smell or taste. In the end, my first actual cooking experience in a long time turned out to be successful.
